Scattered downpours pelted Peru this midweek. In the northeast,
rainfall was 5.0 inches within 24 hours at Iquitos as of Thursday
morning. In the southeast and near the border with Bolivia, Puerto
Maldonado was hit by 4.5 inches of rain within 48 hours ended
Thursday morning.

Parts of the South Pacific island nation of Tuvalu have been
washed by tropical cloudbursts in recent days. The Nui Atoll recorded
at least 10.6 inches of rain from midday Tuesday to early Friday
morning, local time.

Rainfall was 6.9 inches within 48 hours at Papeete, Tahiti, ended
early Wednesday afternoon, local time.

An impressive cold wave persisted over most of the Balkan
Peninsula Thursday. Night-times this week have been especially frigid
over the region owing to clear skies, light winds and, in many
places, a thick snow cover. In Serbia, Sjenica registered consecutive
lows of -17, -21, -21 and -19 degrees Monday through Thursday whereas
February's mean daily low is 23. Bitola, Macedonia, dipped 12 to 14
degrees below zero each of these four mornings.

Unusually heavy wintertime rains soaked parts of northern
Venezuela Monday to early Thursday. At the Simon Bolivar International
airport serving Caracas, the national capital, rainfall was at least
4.6 inches as of Wednesday evening, local time. Spotty observations
taken before and after this time indicate the actual rainfall was
likely much higher. February's average rainfall here is just 0.4 of an
inch, so these downpours unloaded more than 10 times the monthly
mean. Indeed, flooding from these rains has proven to be deadly as
local officials stated at least 13 people were killed.

A strong storm lifting northward over the Norwegian Sea Wednesday
night and Thursday brought windswept rain and snow to parts of Norway
and Sweden. Maximum sustained winds averaged near 40 mph, mainly near
the coast and higher elevations, with some gusts past 50 mph. Over one
inch of rain fell in Stavanger, Norway, before colder air ushered in,
changing the rain over to snow. In Haugedalshogda, Norway, five inches
of snow has fallen since Wednesday. Blowing snow reduced visibility in
Storlien, Sweden as 50 mph sustained winds buffeted the area.

A piece of the winter storm that lashed northern Iran over the
past several days brought heavy rain and higher elevation snow to
Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan and the Kashmir province Wednesday
night and Thursday. Many locations across Pakistan have already
received over one inch of rain with 1.22 inches in Sialkot, 1.46
inches for Balakot and 2.87 inches in Rawalpindi.
