Friday, Tropical Cyclone Kerry is over the western South Pacific
Ocean near northern New Caledonia. Earlier, this moderate storm
crossed the island nation of Vanuatu. Kerry is headed for the eastern
Coral Sea.
A strong tropical wave over the South Indian Ocean near
Australia's remote Cocos Islands is being monitored as a candidate to
become a tropical cyclone.
Rain-laden gales swept over shores of Ireland and Scotland late
Thursday into Friday. Off to the east, North Sea oil rigs clocked
70-mph gusts. In southern Scotland, rainfall was 2.5 inches within 36
hours as of Friday evening, local time, at Eskdalemuir.
A severe heat wave has gripped near-southern South America this
week with some of the worst of the heat being felt Thursday. In
Uruguay, highs were 106 degrees at Salto, and 105 degrees at Paso de
los Toros. These are between 15 and 20 degrees above the daily
average. Vast swatches of Argentina sweltered, the teaming sprawl of
Buenos Aires being no exception. Inner city Buenos Aires registered
96 degrees and readings reached about 100 degrees in city outskirts.
Locally heavy rains have pounded the Indonesian Archipelago this
week. On Jawa (Java), Indonesia, rainfall since Tuesday rose to 15.7

Borneo) was 12.5 inches.

outs were Dampier and Marble Bar, where high temperatures were about
112 degrees.
It was weather gone haywire at Mys (Cape) Shmidt, Russia, where
the temperature Friday evening soared to 36 degrees. Being on the
shores of the Chukchi Sea at 69 degrees north latitude, this
benighted spot in far-northeastern Siberia would normally see highs
between 5 and 10 degrees below zero in January; thus, Friday`s high
was more than 40 degrees above average.
Southeastern Queensland, Australia, was hit by locally heavy rain
Thursday to Friday. At Double Island Point, rainfall was 4.4 inches
within 24 hours ended Friday morning, local time.
Thursday and Friday were unusually cold over the highlands of

degrees, respectively. Each day had an afternoon high of 6 degrees.
All of these marks were 15-25 degrees below average.
