"INDIANAPOLIS -- Gusty winds behind a storm that coated a swath of
north-central Indiana with more than an inch of ice brought down more tree
limbs and power lines Thursday, leaving more than 145,000 homes and
businesses without electricity. He said the weight of the one inch coating
of ice has pushed the weight of a typical span of power line from 70 pounds
to 300 pounds.

Joseph Nield, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in
Indianapolis, said winds between 10 mph and 20 mph and higher gusts
followed the winter storm. "That's not that high, but it doesn't take much
ice accumulation on objects for those winds to bring things down," he said.

Nield said much of Randolph County was coated in a 1¾-inch ice accumulation
and reports elsewhere in north-central Indiana ranged between a half-inch
and 1½ inches."
