January 4, 2005 6:38 p.m.

A vigorous tropical wave over the South Pacific Ocean has the
potential to become a tropical cyclone. Late Tuesday afternoon, EST,
the tropical wave is about 670 miles north-northwest of Suva, Viti
Levu, Fiji, where it is moving north-northwestward at 7 mph.

Recent days have been quite rainy in the South Pacific island
nation of Tuvalu due, largely, to the above-mentioned tropical wave.
At Funafuti, rainfall was 7.6 inches within 24 hours and 8.2 inches
within about 36 hours as of early Tuesday afternoon, local time.

Severe, icy gales lashed segments of Greenland's east coast
Monday and Tuesday. At Ittoqqortoormiit (Scoresbysund), sustained
winds blew 50-70 mph for almost 30 hours as of late afternoon
Tuesday, local time. During the high winds, temperatures rose from 10
to about 20 degrees, but blowing snow kept the visibility to 5/16 of a
mile or less.

Locally excessive rains hit southern Brazil late Monday to Tuesday.
In the state of Santa Catarina, Florianopolis was pelted by 5.1 inches
of rain within 24 hours. These downpours accounted for a sizable
portion of January's 6.8-inch mean rainfall here.

After a relatively warm December overall, the new year has brought
an invasion of cold air into the western plains of Canada. December
had its cold snaps, but these were outnumbered by very warm spells
with temperatures more than 20 degrees above normal on some days. At
Calgary, the severe cold began last Thursday when the high temperature
was only 11 degrees, well below the average high temperature of 25
degrees. Temperatures continued to plummet for the New Year's holiday,
with Friday and Saturday having high temperatures of 6 and 5 degrees
below zero, respectively. Sunday and Monday saw temperatures struggle
into the single-digits above zero, but temperatures plummeted Tuesday
morning, reaching minus 16, the coldest yet. The cold was even more
severe at Edmonton, where the temperature dropped below zero Thursday
night, and had not risen above that mark through Tuesday morning. In
fact, like Calgary, Tuesday morning had the coldest weather yet, with
a temperature of 28 below zero.

Heavy rainfall has doused parts of the west coast of Madagascar
over the last couple of days. Rainfall at Morondava totaled 5.3
inches over two days ended Tuesday afternoon, local time. At Fort
Dauphin, rainfall was nearly 5.4 inches. Fianarantsoa had rainfall of
just over 4 inches, most of this falling within 24 hours.
