Thursday, Typhoon Nanmadol cut a destructive path across Luzon
Island, Philippines. At the time of landfall on the rugged island's
eastern shores, top sustained winds were reckoned to be near 150 mph.
Late Thursday afternoon, EST, Nanmadol has emerged off the northwest
coast and is now over the South China Sea where it is centered 240
miles north-northwest of Manila, Philippines; it is moving towards the
northwest at nearly 30 mph. Highest sustained winds about the
typhoon's eye are still near 125 mph. Nanmadol is forecast to re-curve
thereby making turns towards the north and then the northeast. On this
path, Taiwan would be threatened next by the storm Friday night and
Saturday.

Soaking rains preceded Nanmadol's landfall in northeastern
Philippines. As of early Thursday morning, EST, rainfall was 10.4
inches at Daet, Luzon. On Catanduanes Island, rainfall was 8.3 inches
at Virac and 6.1 inches at Catanduanes Radar. Northern Samar Island
had 7.3 inches of rain at Catarman.

Tropical Cyclone Agni is weakening over the northwestern Indian
Ocean. Late Thursday morning, EST, Agni is centered about 375 miles
southeast of Cape Gwardafuy, Somalia, where its maximum sustained
winds are down to 45 mph. The cyclone is heading towards the west at 8
mph. Agni is forecast to hook southwestward as it nears the coast of
Somalia while weakening further through early Saturday.

Fog cast a thick shroud over portions of Scotland Wednesday and
Thursday. In Glasgow, the fog set in Wednesday morning, local time,
and remained entrenched over the city as of late Thursday evening. The
visibility varied only from 1/16 of a mile to 1/2 of a mile during
this 40-hour span. A sharp chill accompanied the eerie cloak as
temperatures were no higher than 39 degrees; with a large part of the
time sub-freezing, many surfaces were likely icy.
