December 1, 2004 5:53 p.m.

Powerful, dangerous Typhoon Nanmadol is quickly bearing down on
the Philippines from the east. Late Wednesday afternoon, EST, eye of
Nanmadol is about 345 miles east of Manila, Philippines. Making for
the west-northwest at 22 mph, Nanmadol has highest sustained winds of
140 mph. The outer squalls of this big storm are already striking
eastern Philippines. A landfall in eastern Luzon Island is foreseen
taking place Thursday morning, EST.

A tropical cyclone prowling the open western Indian Ocean has been
given the name Agni. Late Wednesday afternoon, EST, Tropical Cyclone
Agni is located about 460 miles southeast of Cape Gwardafuy, Somalia.
With highest sustained winds of 50 mph, the storm is heading towards
the west at 13 mph. Agni is forecast to head mostly towards the
west-northwest over open seas during the next 24-30 hours; thereafter,
it may threaten northeastern Somalia, although it is likely to weaken
beforehand.

Wednesday, bitter cold tightened its grip over Tompo, Russia.
Early in the day, the temperature touched 63 degrees below zero making
it the third-straight day of -60 or lower. What is more, the day-time
alcohol (quicksilver would be frozen) held near the minus-60-degree
mark right through Wednesday. Thus, yet another low of 60 or more
below zero seemed a given. Tompo is well within the Siberian "pole of
cold" which takes in much of the vast Sakha Republic, also called
Yakutiya. Tompo is nestled within a deep valley along its namesake
river within the southern Verkhoyansk Range. The average daily low is
about 40 degrees below zero, so even on the average day, latest
November and early December are inhospitably cold in these parts.
Other sites in Yakutiya seeing -60 degrees early Wednesday were
Churapcha and Amga. The regional capital city, Yakutsk, was shrouded
in ice fog Tuesday and Wednesday as temperatures dipped as much as 52
degrees below zero. The bitter cold snap contrasted with the month of
November as a whole, which was milder than usual by 6.6 degrees.

Tuesday and Wednesday saw exceptional heat waft right to the sea
in New South Wales, Australia. In and about Williamtown, Tuesday
topped out 105 degrees; Wednesday tickled 110. Farther south, the
city of Sydney suffered in heat that registered 108 degrees early
Wednesday afternoon. At this time, a cold front known locally as a
`southerly buster` swept in on wind gusts of 45 to 55 mph. The
temperature nose-dived from the high of 108 degrees to only 72 within
about 80 minutes.

The Costa del Sol was less than sunny early Wednesday as rainfall
of 3.3 inches splashed El Rompedizo, Spain.

Soaking showers and thunderstorms struck greater Johannesburg,
South Africa, Tuesday to Wednesday. Within less than 30 hours,
rainfall was 3.7 inches at the Jan Smuts airport which serves this
city. Average rainfalls here are 4.7 and 4.3 inches, respectively,
during November and December.

Rainfall has been heavy over some parts of central Indonesia this
midweek. On Java (Jawa), Tegal was doused by 5.7 inches of rain within
48 hours as of early Wednesday, local time. On Bawean, a small island
in the Java Sea, rainfall was 6.5 inches within 42 hours ended early
Thursday morning at Sangkapura.
