Typhoon Rananim blasted across Japan's Sakishima Shoto Wednesday
and is now moving ashore along the east coast of China about 150 miles
south of Shanghai. As the storm moved across Ishigaki Jima, Japan, an
island just north of Taiwan, sustained winds of nearly 50 mph
occurred along with 6.26 inches of rain. Miyakojima, an island nearby
had nearly 9 inches of rain and winds to about 45 mph. The storm
brushed the northern part of Taiwan on it's trek westward and Taipei
had 3 inches of rain. Penkaiyu, a Taiwanese island just north of
Taipei was much harder hit. It had sustained winds over 60 mph and
almost 8 inches of rain in just over 15 hours time. As the storm
neared the coast of China, a small island, Ta-chen-tao, just off the
coast had sustained winds of 80 mph. Rananim has sustained winds
about it's center of nearly 100 mph, so there will be considerable
wind damage and a powerful storm surge along the coast near
Shitang where it makes landfall. The storm will then move inland and
torrential rainfall over the next couple of days will cause
significant flooding problems across the province of Zhejiang.
This week has been unusually warm in Iceland, and Wednesday
brought the warmest weather of all. In the southwest, Keflavik
and Reykjavik, the national capital, both spiked to 77 degrees. The
southeastern town of Hofn was nearly as warm with a high of 76
degrees. All three of these sites have a mean daily high in the middle
50s during August. The weather cooled somewhat on Thursday, though
temperatures were still above normal. Reykjavik and Keflavik highs of
70, and Hofn had a high of 72.
Central and southern Algeria have been baking under sweltering
sunshine the past few days. From Monday through Wednesday, many spots
soared past 110 and some areas were above 115 degrees. The hot spots
Wednesday were Adrar, Hassi Messaoud and Ouargla, each peaking at 119
degrees.
Hurricane Charley intensified further in the western Caribbean
Sea Thursday. By afternoon, top sustained winds with the storm were
105 mph. Charley narrowly missed Jamaica Wednesday night, where
Kingston had sustained winds of 30 mph and 2.25 inches of rain. The
storm came within 30 miles of Grand Cayman Thursday morning, the rain
and wind with the storm remained just to the north. Winds at
Georgetown stayed under 30 mph, and rainfall was less than one half
inch. Charley will move northward over western Cuba Thursday night,
and then hit Florida on Friday.
