Last evening I had to take a trip to the Sunshine Skyway bridge in south St. Petersburg to pick up some family members who were fishing and ran into car trouble as they were leaving.

In any event upon arrival I looked eastward from the bridge and saw a most amazing display of Cumulonimbus (thunderstorms) off in the distance. I saw several overshooting tops and endless lightning activity. Actually the lightning was continuous both intra cloud and cloud to ground and rumbles of thunder were audible, even though the closest storms were at least 30 miles away. My first impression was one of developing severe weather and shortly thereafter severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for Haines City and Bartow areas of Polk County.

Unfortunately though when I went to snap a few photo's of the storms I discovered that my digital camera batteries had died!!!!! So I missed out on some real keepers.

Looking at archived radar views of the incoming storms late last night were awesome. Unfortunately though at my weather station in suburban SW Plant City I only measured 0.11" of rainfall, giving me a July total of only 0.48" for the month. Tampa International Airport received no measurable rainfall, 16 days in a row now and I think a new record for July.

The source of the severe storms was a vorticity maximum at 700 mb that crossed the peninsula form NE to SW around the eastern periphery of the westward retreating high pressure ridge.

Before last evenings storms the past three days had been very hot and unusually dry here in west central Florida.
