In southwestern Asia, 115-degree heat was registered Tuesday
within several nations. Kuwait's namesake capital city reached at
least 117 degrees. Adjacent Iraq and southwestern Iran, with few
disseminated weather observations, also were about 115 degrees as of
mid afternoon. Doha, Qatar, reached 116 degrees, and in UAE, El Ayn
showed 117.

The week began with rainfall of 6.2 inches, mostly within 24
hours, at Bhairawa, Nepal.

Jarud Qi, Nei Mongol (Inner Mongolia), China, collected 9.0
inches of rain over about two days ended early Tuesday morning, local
time. This was 30 to 50 percent of the mean yearly rainfall for this
part of Asia.

Vostok station, Antarctica, observed a low of 105 degrees below
zero early Monday, then 103 below early Tuesday. Later Tuesday, Dome
"C" station showed 110 degrees below zero.

Monday, a heat wave over far-western China culminated in a high
of 112 degrees at Turfan. There followed an overnight low of 85.
Turfan is the "Death Valley" of China, a depression whose floor is
below sea level.

Tuesday was unusually hot and sticky in parts of Japan, especially
on the big island of Honshu. Here, highs were 97, 96 and 95 degrees,
respectively, at Maebashi, Osaka and Matsumoto. Each of these three
cities has a July average daily maximum in the lower 80s.

In northwestern Tunisia, Tuesday was hot right to the shores of
the Mediterranean Sea. At Tabarqa, a high of 104 degrees was set
versus an average high in the middle to upper 80s.
