In science fiction flicks, a ferocious flash of lightning can often
transform a mere mortal into a superhuman entity suddenly possessing a
plethora of electrifying powers. If the same held true for cars, you
would likely see the Eckland van tearing up the course at the next
Molson Indy, or breaking the sound barrier on a dusty country road.
Instead, a day after its riveting kiss with Mother Nature, a charred
antenna presents itself as the only evidence that the humble family
vehicle absorbed nearly a billion volts of electricity as it trudged
through a storm on the 401 Sunday night.

The spectacular flash of violent beauty was caught on tape by a car
traveling behind them.

To quote Jack Kerouac's On The Road, the impact of the lightning bolt
produced a wild light show that looked like "fabulous yellow roman
candles exploding like spiders across the stars." Despite all the
commotion, the Ecklands didn't even realize that they had been struck at
first. After a few moments of stunned recollection, it began to dawn on
them.

"His reaction was, wow!" Michelle Eckland said of her husband, who was
in the car along with their three children. "And then he goes I think we
were hit by lightning. He said I'm sure we were hit by lightning."

They didn't really realize the magnitude of the blast until they saw it
on CityPulse.

"Being inside of it and actually seeing little sparks, (they) didn't
seem as big as when I saw it on the news at 12," she added. "It was just
huge. It just looked like a fireworks display coming from the van."

Although the incident looked treacherous, Environment Canada officials
say to date no one has ever been killed by lightning while traveling in
a car. In fact, the car is one of the safest places you can be during an
electrical storm, since it immediately grounds the electricity.
