Tuesday proved to be coldest of the year thus far at the Vostok
station of Antarctica. The low temperature was nearly 109 degrees
below zero, and this was followed by a high of -104 degrees.
Temperature of 109 degrees, apparent temperature of 125, 35-mph
winds and visibility below one-half mile in blowing dust. Such was
the shape of Tuesday's mid-afternoon weather near the Red Sea at
Yanbu'al Bahr, Saudi Arabia.
May was exceptional in its summery heat over the heart of Siberian
Russia. A belt straddling the Trans Siberian Railway eastward from the
southern Ural Mountains was warmer than average by 10 or more
degrees. The city of Novosibirsk ended 12.6 degrees above average, a
remarkable departure for a whole month. A heat wave at mid month
bulwarked this departure: hottest of four-straight 90-degree days,
May 18th, registered 97 degrees, or at least 35 degrees above average.
Monday, eastern Mexico suffered searing heat for a second-
straight day. Monterrey reach a wilting 106 degrees. Farther north,
Monclova hit 107 degrees, and Piedras Negras, 108.
A rainstorm brought May to an unusually wet finish at the
northeastern end of Canada's Great Slave Lake in the Northwest
Territories. At Fort Reliance, Monday's rainfall was 1.13 inches.
Here, May's mean rainfall is about 0.6 of an inch and the average
rainfall for June is 1.1 inches. The annual precipitation average is
only 10.0 inches.
Northeastern Brazil was doused by locally excessive rainfall
Monday to Tuesday. In the state of Alagoas, the oceanside capital city
of Maceio was pelted by 7.6 inches of rain within 30 hours as of
midafternoon Tuesday.
Parts of northeastern China endured abnormally hot weather
Tuesday. North of Bo Hai, the innermost gulf of the Yellow Sea,
Chaoyang soared nearly 20 degrees above average in reaching 98
degrees. Beijing recorded a high of 93 degrees with this being about
10 degrees too hot for the first of June.
