QUOTES:
"HALLAM, Neb. - People returned to this small town Sunday to see if they
could salvage anything from the pounding of the previous night. But the
places where they had lived and worked less than 24 hours before were gone
- reduced to piles of lumber, punctuated by shredded trees. Only portions
of the walls of a Hallam church remain. Gov. Mike Johanns said the town of
about 275 suffered "near total devastation." "It just tore this town
apart,' he said of the tornado that ripped through the community Saturday
night.

Hallam was the hardest hit among the southeast Nebraska communities touched
by the storm. Preliminary reports from the National Weather Service
indicated that the tornado that hit Hallam was at least an F-3 ... Although
it's not certain how many twisters hit the state - there were reports of 19
sightings - the series of tornadoes may have been the most to hit Nebraska
since at least 1950, said Dan McCarthy of the national Storm Prediction
Center.

More than 30,000 homes in eastern Nebraska were without power at some point
Saturday night and Sunday morning. Almost all had power restored by Sunday
afternoon despite high-voltage power lines on the ground in a wide swath
from southeast Nebraska to the southern edge of the Omaha metropolitan area.

The metal bins of the Hallam Grain Co. elevator were twisted and broken.
Corn and soybeans lay in heaps along the street. Rail cars lay on their
sides along the railroad tracks. Anhydrous ammonia tanks were overturned on
the edge of town. The business district stood in ruins. So did the fire
hall around the corner. House after house had already been posted as
condemned by emergency workers. Some homes lay in pieces of shattered
lumber. Others were missing their roofs and attics, or shifted off their
foundations.

More tornado damage was reported as far west as Bruning, along Nebraska
Highway 4. The damage included toppled center-pivot irrigation units and
flattened grain bins.
