"New Delhi, May 18 (IANS) :

As parts of northern and western India sweltered under the intense summer
sun, southern and eastern India received much-awaited rains Tuesday.

Citizens of the national capital however felt some relief as the mercury
fell to 42.6 degrees Celsius, a little less than two degrees from the
smouldering 44.5 degrees Monday - the highest this season.

Jammu and Kashmir experienced a pleasant day at 23.9 degrees Celsius, two
degrees below normal, the meteorological office said.

However, other northern states like Rajasthan (average 43 degrees), Punjab
(44.4 degrees), Haryana (44.4 degrees), Uttar Pradesh (43.8 degrees) and
parts of Madhya Pradesh (42.2 degrees) continued to sweat due to the severe
heat wave sweeping through the region."
