QUOTES:
"In a matter of minutes, the storm pelted the Peoria area with blinding
rainfall. There were reports of tornado touchdowns before the storm left
the area as quickly as it swept in, leaving flooding and thousands of
residents without power.
Though damage was widespread, there were no reports of serious injuries. A
fire that may have been caused by lightning heavily damaged the Courtyard
Inn by Marriott, 1928 W. War Memorial Drive. An electrical fire that
started after a tree knocked down a power wire caused about $3,000 in
damage to the garage of an apartment building at 914 W. Moss Ave.
At Komatsu America Corp. in the North Valley, the roof of a
warehouse collapsed under the weight of the water and because of the wind,
said Fire Battalion Chief Gary VanVoorhis. In East Peoria, the storm blew
off several roofs and downed trees, mostly in a line of houses along
Coventry Lane, north of Washington Street.
The National Weather Service office in Lincoln received reports of brief
tornado touchdowns in Tazewell and McLean counties, with gusts of wind
between 60 and 70 mph.
At 5:20 p.m., a tornado was spotted three miles west of Washington in an
open field. No damage was reported. A brief tornado touchdown was reported
at Interstate 74 and U.S. Route 51 on the south side of Bloomington at 6:26
p.m.
The downpour left many Peoria streets, especially north of War Memorial,
flooded and nearly impassable. Some cars were left abandoned, with water up
to their windows. The storm left more than 14,000 Peoria-area residents
without power.
At Jonah's Seafood House in East Peoria, the storm broke out windows in the
oyster bar. A tin roof on the restaurant's deck blew off in a bad storm in
1988 and the roof was rebuilt to be stronger - or so the designers thought.
It blew off again Tuesday."
