[STORMREPORTS] AccuWeather World Weather Highlights Tuesday, Apr 13

April 13, 2004 6:17 p.m.

Late Tuesday afternoon, EDT, powerful Typhoon Sudal has an eye
about 45 miles wide over the open Philippine Sea. This eye is 590
miles southwest of Iwo Jima. The mighty storm owns highest sustained
winds of 130-135 mph as it makes its way towards the northeast at 13
mph. Sudal is forecast to accelerate towards the northeast over the
next two to three days; its path may cross the Volcano Islands, which
include Iwo Jima.

Bitter arctic gales early this week lashed western Novaya Zemyla,
Russia. At the outpost of Malyye Karmakuly, steady winds of 45 to 55
mph were the rule, and this with temperatures between 5 and 15
degrees. Harsh as these winds were, things were even worse Friday
through Sunday: at least a 48-hour stretch saw sustained winds of at
least 60 mph, and above 70 mph of the time. Gusts, while not reported,
may have topped 80 and even 90 mph.

Freakishly warm, dry winds early this week parched Iraklion, Greece,
on the island of Kriti (Crete). Overnight humidity was as low as 5%
as winds gusted 30 to 40 mph. In the "wee hours" of Tuesday morning,
a burst of warm wind hoisted the temperature to 81 degrees, equal to
the mean high for June. The warmth betrayed the origins of the wind
stream: it was off the Sahara, where Monday saw 100-degree heat in
Libya.

At the South Pole some remarkably low wind chill temperatures
were registered Tuesday. The weather station at the Amundsen-Scott
station showed 77 degrees below zero with 21 mph of wind. This made
for a wind chill of 124 degrees below zero.

Summery heat baked much of middle South America Tuesday afternoon.
Temperatures soared 10, 20 and more degrees above average in northern
Argentina, Uruguay, southern Brazil, Paraguay and parts of eastern
Bolivia. In Uruguay, Paso de los Toros spiked to 98 degrees by
midafternoon, far surpassing the average high for the day of 75. Even
the country's waterside burned unusually hot. At the Carrasco airport,
which serves the capital city Montevideo, 93 degrees was registered
versus a mean daily high of 71. Buenos Aires, Argentina, withered with
temperatures in the lower 90s right to the Rio de la Plata; again,
these marks were a full 20 degrees too warm for an average mid-April
day. Afternoon temperatures in the lower and middle 90s were fairly
widespread elsewhere in northern Argentina, Brazil's state of Rio
Grande do Sul, Paraguay and eastern Bolivia, but there were hotter
spots still. Mariscal Estigarribia and Prats-Gil, both in western
Paraguay, and San Jose, Bolivia, were all near 100 degrees.
