HEADLINES:

Vast Eastern U.S. Storm Is Finally Winding Down, But Only After Another Day
Of Heavy Rain, Strong Thunderstorms; Reversal Of 500MB Longwave Pattern Should
Result In Period Of Warmer, Drier Weather Across Dixie, Corn Belt and
Mid-Atlantic States This Weekend, While Intermountain Region Turns Cooler And Wetter

EXPECTED NORTH AMERICA SEVERE OR EXTREME WEATHER NEXT 24 HOURS:

designated below in the SEVERE WEATHER OUTLOOK stay cloudy, chances for hail and
gusty winds will be reduced this afternoon.
The tropical moisture fetch lining up along the western shoreline of the
Atlantic Ocean could prove quite troublesome. As one impulse moves from the NC
Outer Banks into southern New England later today, rain (with embedded thunder)
may exceed the 1-3" guidelines posted in the listed HEAVY RAINFALL OUTLOOK. The
last viable shortwave in the series, responsible for the severe weather risk
in S FL today, is expected to move rapidly northward and link with the cold
dome over the Southeast. This action could well prolong the wet agony of LI
NY....CT....RI....MA....VT....NH....ME through Wednesday. By Thursday, however,
the energy should be positioned east of the MA Islands and no longer of
consequence to sensible weather in the Atlantic Coastal Plain.
Very warm and mostly dry conditions are now ensconced across the western
third of the nation, thanks to ridging covering the Desert Regions and Great
Plains. Showers, however, are already breaking out in the Pacific Northwest as a
trough and upper low approach from the west. Orography could, in concert with
upper difluence, enhance potential for thunderstorms from the Great Basin into
the northern Rocky Mountains today and tomorrow. By Day 3, only a small portion
of the West, close to the Mexican border, will remain in the above normal
category for temperatures, with the cT regime shifting into the south central U.S.
