Friday, a strong tropical wave is near the eastern Caroline
Islands; it is a strong candidate for the next named tropical storm
for the western North Pacific Ocean.
Soaking rains have pelted some islands of French Polynesia this
week. On the Takaroa Atoll, rainfall since last weekend was
16 to 18 inches as of Friday afternoon, local time.
Searing heat baked the eastern Arabian Peninsula from the United
Arab Emirates to northern Oman Thursday. Highs above 100 degrees were
widespread. In Sohar, Oman, the 108-degree high was almost 25 degrees
above average. Nearby, Muscat surged to 106 degrees far surpassing the
mean high for the date which is near 90. Moreover, the temperature
dipped only to 89 degrees by Friday morning whereas an average day in
early April would have a low in the lower 70s.
Scattered cloudbursts pelted northern Mozambique Thursday to
Friday. The oceanside city of Pemba, for example, was doused by 5.9
inches of thundery rain within 24 hours as of Friday morning, local
time. These downpours exceeded the average rainfall here for all of
April which is about 4.4 inches.
