Soaking rains have pelted parts of French Polynesia this week. On
the Takaroa Atoll, rainfall was about 11.5 inches from Saturday
afternoon to Thursday morning, local time.
This midweek saw a sharp turn in the weather from summerlike to,
in some cases, wintry in northern Iran. Take Ghuchan, where a reading
of 78 degrees was taken on Tuesday afternoon. On Thursday, exactly 48
hours later, the temperature stood at 33 degrees, snow was falling
heavily, and a couple of inches of fresh snow lay on the ground. In
other areas, the change to colder weather was highlighted by heavy
rain. Rainfall was 1.9 inches at Gorgan and 1.8 inches at Hamadan.
At the Amundsen-Scott station, South Pole, Antarctica, the
temperature slipped -89 degrees Tuesday, the coldest it has been since
September 26th, 2003. Temperatures had stayed below -80 degrees for 4
straight days, ending Wednesday. The normal high and low temperatures
are between -64 and -74 degrees for the end of March. From Wednesday
night into Thursday, milder air, relatively speaking, has moved in.
The temperature soared to -36. The warming was however accompanied by
strong winds and a blinding whiteout due to blowing snow.
A late season snowfall whitened parts of northeastern China
Wednesday night into Thursday as a storm pushed across the Korean
peninsula and into the Sea of Japan. Along the coast of northeast
China, it was mild enough for plain rain, but 50 to 80 miles inland
entrenched cold air led to mainly snow. In the cities of Shenyang and
Benxi, several inches of snow fell.
