A deep winter storm tapping the arctic cold from eastern North
America Friday slammed the Atlantic lands of Canada. On northern
Newfoundland, it was the second day of on-and-off blizzard that, as of
early Saturday, left up to two feet of new snow. Winds at the height
of Friday's blizzard surged to speeds of 70 to 75 mph. Early Friday,
Twillingate weathered gust to 83 mph. It was much the same on the
nearby mainland of Labrador, and at Blanc Sablon in easternmost
Quebec, where hurricane gusts and whiteouts marked the height of
Friday's blast. The storm was also remarkable for its low pressure:
Deer Lake, NF, registered a low of 945.6 millibars, or 27.92 inches
of mercury -- low as many a powerful hurricane.
An Atlantic blizzard separate from that ripping eastern Canada
Friday night tore through Iceland. Hurricane winds and snowfall of
about one foot highlighted the storm at Heimaey, Vestmannaeyjar, off
the southern mainland. Winds and snows were less severe at Reykjavik;
nonetheless, squally snows were churned about by winds above 45 mph.
On Friday night into Saturday, heavy snow pelted Dalatangi and
Raufarhofn.
Moree, in northern New South Wales, Australia, was washed by
4.7 inches of rain Thursday to early Saturday. This was more than
twice the average share of rain for all of January.
Heavy, late-week rains have pelted Brasil near the mouth of the
Amazon River. At the city of Belem, two-day rainfall was 6.9 inches as
of Saturday morning. At Soure, 7.7 inches fell.
Moscow, Russia has had a veritable "heat wave" this past week.
Since last Sunday, daily high temperatures have been in the middle
20s or higher, and on three days, the mercury reached or exceeded 30
degrees. Friday was the "warmest" day with a high of 34. The average
high for this time of year is 15 degrees. So far this month,
temperatures are running nearly 8 degrees above average.
