For the last number of days we have been under the influence of a strong
Alberta Clipper bringing very cold temperatures and even colder wind chills
with wind chill values in the -40oC to -45oC every day. Daytime highs
of -25oC to -20oC each day and lows of -33oC to -28oC at night.
When this is coupled with the winds from the north at 30km/hr and gusting to
50km/hr extreme winds chill warnings and frost bite warnings have been the
norm since January 8th, 2004. We are expecting a break in the temperatures
over the next couple of days but the winds will continue to hold us to high
wind chill values in and around the -30oC range.
Thus far a number of people have died from this cold snap and we have
experienced the odd power failure as well. Hydro says that consumption is up
enough that they have had to import electricity from the United States to
cover the demand but are asking folks to reduce their power usage.
