Bitter arctic cold early Thursday still held sway over eastern
Canada. In the East Townships of Quebec, Sherbrooke shivered at 42
degrees below zero. Fifty miles northwest of Montreal, Saint-Jovite
bottomed at 42 below zero. The big cities, while not as exceptional,
still suffered abnormal cold. Lows in greater Montreal were 20 to 25
degrees below zero. The city of Quebec reached at least 27 degrees
below zero. Ottawa, Ontario, hit -22 degrees.
A harsh winter storm Wednesday into Thursday hit the Atlantic
lands of Canada with high winds and heavy snows. Stephenville, in
western Newfoundland, clocked winds of 50-65 mph as five inches of
fresh snow fell.
A storm this week has left exceptional rainfall over western
Mexico. At Empalme, near Guaymas, Sonora, rainfall was about two
inches within 24 hours ended Wednesday afternoon. This was about
six-fold the mean monthly rainfall. La Paz, Baja California Sur,
picked up 1.6 inches over two days; here, only 0.13 of an inch on
average happens in all of January.
The Australian state of Queensland this week has been pelted with
torrential, seasonal rains. The outback mining town of Mount Isa was
walloped: 13.7 inches have fallen since the start of the week
bolstered by the 7.8 inches that fell late Wednesday to early
Thursday. Near the coast, the city of Brisbane picked up 5.1 inches
within 24 hours ended Thursday evening. On the tropical coast, rain
amounting to 6.6 inches splashed Cairns Wednesday and Thursday.
For a second-straight day, the temperature topped 50 degrees in
Calgary, Alberta, Canada, on Thursday continuing a marked reversal in
the weather from earlier in the month. Wednesday's high of 52 degrees
was more than 30 degrees above average. Moreover, Thursday's morning
low of 38 was 37 degrees above the mean daily low and even 17 degrees
above the average high for the date. January began on a frigid note
here as the average temperature for the first seven days was 16
degrees below "normal". Since then the average temperature has been
more than 20 degrees above "normal".
Heavy showers and thunderstorms unloaded 4.5 inches of rain upon
Riberalta, Bolivia, Wednesday to Thursday. This rainfall was about
one-half of the average for all of January.
