"A blizzard sideswiped coastal regions along the Sea of Japan from Hokkaido
to the Chugoku region Wednesday morning, peeling back the roof of a train
station and dumping snow that disrupted air and rail services.

New Chitose Airport in western Hokkaido was forced to close Wednesday
morning due to snow on its runways.

Meanwhile, mountain areas of Hokkaido and the Hokuriku region were bracing
for the 60 to 80 centimeters of snow expected to fall by this morning,
according to the agency.

In Tsubame, Niigata Prefecture, winds that reached speeds of more than 108
kph blew over a prefabricated storage shed at an electric works company
around 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday, and sent it sailing into power lines 12 meters
above.

Later on Tuesday night, strong winds tore back a 20-meter section of the
iron roof of JR Toyosaka Station in Toyosaka, Niigata Prefecture.

As East Japan Railway Co. (JR East) workers labored for three hours to make
repairs, three other train services were suspended at a nearby station,
according to officials of JR East's Niigata branch.

All Shinkansen trains running between Gifu-Hashima and Kyoto on the Tokaido
Line on Wednesday morning reduced their speed, causing delays of up to
about 20 minutes.(IHT/Asahi: January 15,2004) (01/15)
