Bitter cold early Wednesday once again clenched eastern Canada.
Between northeastern Manitoba and northern Quebec were widespread
readings 35 to 45 degrees below zero. One that truly stood out from
the crowd was the La-Grande-4 hydro dam in northern Quebec, where the
morning low was at least 58 degrees below zero. In the cities,
meantime, Ottawa slipped to 21 below zero. Quebec City saw 24 below,
and Montreal slipped nearly 20 degrees below zero.
In stark contrast to the rest of the nation, southwestern sections
of Canada have been milder than average in recent days. Parts of
southern Alberta, most notably, have enjoyed springlike weather. The
province's largest city, Calgary, hit 50 degrees late Wednesday
afternoon versus an average high of 21. Tuesday was mild, too, with a
high of 47 degrees. Between these two maximums, the temperature only
fell to 33 degrees Wednesday morning, a reading which was more than 30
degrees above the mean daily low.
Parts of western Mexico have received an unusual wintertime
soaking this midweek. In the state of Nayarit, for example, rainfall
was 1.1 inches at Tepic Tuesday to Wednesday whereas the mean January
rainfall is about 0.7 of an inch.
A rash of storms early this week has spread soaking rains over
western Europe. Rainfall has been one to locally three inches over
much of France, southern Germany and Switzerland. As it has been warm
for January, the snow line has been rather high over the Alps. Atop
the Feldberg in the Schwarzwald of southwestern Germany, the output
of rain with some snow and ice was equivalent to 3.5 inches of water.
As the Feldberg is nearly 5000 feet above sea level, snow would
normally predominate here in winter storms. Farther north and east,
another mountain in Germany, Grosser Falkenstein, had more ice and
snow than rain, and all were equivalent to 3.7 inches -- enough for a
hefty blanket of tough, crusted snow.
Wednesday, a blizzard racked the northern island of Hakkaido,
Japan. Sapporo, Kushiro, Nemuro and Abashiri were amongst the cities
picking up fresh snowfall of 6-12 inches; this was churned about by
winds gusting 40 to 60 mph.
