[STORMREPORTS] nw VA: Single digit lows common this past weekend

Winchester VA:

On Friday a dusting of snow created no real problems here. On I-81,
traffic maintained the usual 65 to 70mph & soon paid the price, creating
several accidents, many involving tractor trailers. Other roads were
slick, but few accidents were reported off the interstates.

Locally, the city schools went on time. The nearest counties went 2
hours late, and where 1" had fallen south & west, schools were closed.

In the Washington area, there was a 50% chance of getting up to 1" of
snow, or none at all. It began about 3-4 am. The roads were slippery &
snow covered. Since a full deployment of DOT trucks had not been on
standby, crews got a late start. Traffic in the Washington region slowed
to a crawl or to stop & go. Many roads looked like parking lots. Many
said a 15 to 30 minute commute took several hours. Some, including one
news anchor, left cars & hoofed it.

Meanwhile down in Norfolk, they had 2" of snow, but no traffic woes to
speak of. Norfolk gets 2 or 3 snowfalls a season. Washington gets
several a season.

northeastern NC on their 1st snowfall of season.

On Friday & Saturday, the coldest air enveloped the east coast. Although
not unusual for January, the supply route was unusual. It normally comes
from Siberia, over the North Pole, into the Hudson Bay or just west, &
into the Great Lakes & oozes over the Appalachians. Instead the rushed
down to the east of the Hudson Bay & down the Eastern Seaboard.

Locally, even more impessive, is that there was NO snow cover. Usually
to get single digit lows here, there must a extensive snow pack, clear
sky, & calm wind. There was still a breeze Saturday am, and the sky had
not cleared to daybreak.

Here is some of the COLDEST US temps I found:

Fri AM:
Berlin NH -36
Whitefield NH -36
Mt. Washington -34

Sat AM
Whitefield NH -34
Saranac Lake NY -34

Sun AM
Whitefield NH -31
Berlin NH -30

The cold air reached Florida too. Some examples of Saturday temps:

Apachachiola L31 H45
Daytona Beach L38 H56
Ft Myers L38 H58
Jacksonville L30 H42
Miami L42 H67
Winter Haven L38 H50

I saw briefly on TWC that it was warmer in parts of the west or Rockies
than in FL. I looked for that info but could find much. I did see 2 AWOS
stations that did have warmer than FL temps. St George UT had 61 & Zion
UT had 60 on Sat.

In the Mid Atlantic region, I saw only one record broken: Salisbury MD
beat the old record from 1988 by 1 degree Sat am. Most other stations
were 5 to 10 degrees above daily records. In VA's southside, records
were 8 to 16º below weekend lows.

Here are Sat am low/ Sat high/ Sun am lows at stations that maintain
climate records for the 3 NWS offices in VA. For a few stations on Sat,
high temperatures were at or just after Midnight, and are marked (am).

========
The cold air lifted out Sunday, rising to near 32, then into the 50's
Monday.

The next push of Arctic air arrives Tuesday evening. By Wednesday night
& early Thursday, the next clipper will sweep through the region. If the
trek is just south or overhead, we could get several inches of snow. If
it treks north we get a few. These were the SPS issued Monday afternoon
on the event.
