Gales early Monday swept off the North Atlantic Ocean to lash
northwestern France. In Normandy, Caen clocked gusts to 57 mph, and
over-night gusts hit 55 mph at the Orly airport in Paris. In the
English Channel, the island Jersey was racked by 65-mph wind squalls.
High winds late last week blasted southern Patagonia. On the
Chilean side, the Evangelista Islands weathered frequent gales and a
few hurricane bursts. On top of this, rainfall was nearly four
inches. Gusts of 50 to 60 mph blasted Punta Arenas, Chile, and in
Argentina, hit Ushuaia, Rio Grande and Rio Gallegos.
Western and northwestern Australia Monday suffered 110-degree heat.
Amongst hot spots were Roebourne with 113 degrees, Dampier and
Morawa, 112.
After two days of heavy rain, rainfall Monday rose to 8.3 inches
at Finike in southwestern Turkey. Rainfall was 5.3 inches at Antalya.
Downpours have hit parts of southern Thailand in recent days
during a usually rather dry time of the year. At Lop Buri, rainfall
was 1.5 inches in only six hours on Sunday whereas the average
rainfall for all of January is 0.4 of an inch. Monday, the town of
Phetchaburi collected 1.9 inches of rain. In Bangkok, the national
capital, rainfall was about 0.8 of an inch Sunday through Monday or
more than twice the monthly mean.
In central Quebec, Canada, Monday's morning low was 52 degrees
below zero at Lac Benoit. This was the second day in a row to plummet
to minus-52.
