Bitter arctic cold early Friday hovered once again north of the
Great Lakes in Ontario, Canada. Before daybreak, the temperature
at Nagagami slipped to 50 degrees below zero. Farther east,
temperatures 45 to 50 degrees below zero were set at Kapuskasing and
Timmins.
Torrential rains Friday for a second-straight day washed the
southern Zagros Mountains, Iran. The rains focused upon rugged lands
northeast from the Arabian Gulf in the region of Fars. Two-day
rainfall was 5.9 inches at Fasa, and 4.2 inches at Shiraz. Somewhat
earlier, rainfall was about six inches at Yasuj.
Two days of on-and-off, heavy snow as of late Friday left a
fresh, deep blanket over Sapporo in northern Japan. Two-day snowfall
was at least 20 inches, and the snow depth rose to nearly 30 inches.
Excessive rainfall pelted northern and eastern sections of Bolivia
Thursday to Friday. Many places collected 1-3 inches of rain within 30
hours as of Friday afternoon, and there were some even higher
rainfalls. Reyes collected 3.5 inches, for example. The town of
Trinidad reported 3.2 inches within 24 hours ended Friday morning,
then another 8.0 inches during the next six hours. If true, the
11.2-inch soaking constitutes a large part of the January mean
rainfall of 12.5 inches.
In eastern Turkey, Erzurum plummeted to minus-15 degrees early
Friday morning. This mark was about 20 degrees below the daily mean
low.
Emerald, Queensland, Australia, was soaked by 3.9 inches of rain
within 18 hours as of early Saturday, local time. This rainfall
nearly equaled the January average which is 4.1 inches.
