All,
I can verify that. NWS headquarters has an AWIPS station that mirrors the one at the Sterling, VA, NWS Weather Forecast Office for purposes such as testing, training, development, and emergency backup. A software developer inadvertently transmitted a message... apparently, it wasn't clear to everyone who uses those AWIPS machines that messages would actually transmit as though Sterling had issued them. The powers that be are already taking steps to change the configuration of the machines to prevent this from happening again.
Those software people... :)
Cheers,
Barbara Mayes
Meteorologist and Customer Liaison, NWS Climate Services Division
