In England and Scotland, 2003 was the sunniest year on record,
according the United Kingdom's Met Office. Both areas bested 1995 for
the number of hours of sunshine. Additionally, Scotland registered its
warmest calendar year beating out 1997 by about 0.4 of a degree
Fahrenheit.
Thursday, bitter cold covered nearly all of Canada. Morning low
temperatures were below zero throughout the country with the only
exceptions being southern and western British Columbia, southernmost
Ontario and eastern Newfoundland. The core of the frigid air resided
from Nunavut to Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec. Here, lows of 15 to 45
degrees below zero were common, and there were colder spots still.
Lansdowne House, Ontario, plummeted 50 degrees below zero, or about
35 degrees below average. Elsewhere in Ontario, Winisk and Big Trout
Lake both fell to minus-47 degrees, and Nagagami dropped to minus-46.
A low of minus-40 degrees was recorded in southwestern Quebec at
Matagami.
With the intrusion of cold, dry air into the low-level
circulation, what used to be Cyclone Heta is now just an extratropical
low as of Thursday afternoon, EST. The remnants of Heta are located
about 600 miles south of Rarotonga in the Cook Islands and are moving
to the south-southeast at 18 mph. No more advisories are expected to
be issued on this system unless regeneration occurs, but this is
unlikely.
A storm system moving through Iran Wednesday night and Thursday
brought a decent round of rain and thunderstorms to the southwestern
and south-central part of the country. Some specific rainfall totals
include: Yasage 3.54 inches, Gach Saran 3.13 inches, Shiraz 1.83
inches, Agha Jari 1.70 inches, Masjed-Soleyman 1.59 inches, Fasa 1.30
inches, Ahwaz 1.22 inches, Esfahan 1.15 inches, Bushehr 1.04 inches,
Ali-Goodarz 1.03 inches. The heaviest rain remained south of the
capital city of Tehran which picked up just under three-quarters of an
inch of rain.
