Powerful Cyclone Heta is spinning away from the island of Niue,
which it earlier hit head-on. Late Tuesday afternoon, EST, the eye of
Heta is over the South Pacific Ocean about 325 miles southeast of
Niue. Now headed southeastwards at 18 mph, Heta still packs the wallop
of 130-mph top sustained winds, winds that it may have unleashed upon
Niue. Now, nothing but open seas lie in the likely path of Heta; it is
forecast to accelerate towards the southeast, to weaken and to
ultimately become an extra-tropical storm.
Tropical Cyclone Ken is dissipating off North West Cape,
Australia, after having been battered by shearing winds and cool,
dry inflow. With highest sustained winds below 25 mph, Ken is
forecast to fade into oblivion within a day or so.
A low of 72 degrees below zero Tuesday was set at Oymyakon,
Russia, making it four-straight days bottoming 70 to 74 degrees below
zero. But this may have been the end of the cold wave, as snow clouds
Tuesday evening "warmed" Oymyakon into the minus-40s.
Canada's largest city, Toronto, saw a spell of unseasonably mild
weather that began in mid-December come to a sudden end Monday and
Tuesday. At the Pearson International Airport, Monday was the first day
since December 20th to stay below freezing. Even so, the day's average
temperature was 4 degrees above the mean registering it as the 16th
consecutive day to be milder than average. It also marked the 25th day
out of 28 to have such a distinction. The average temperature during
these 28 days was 10 degrees above the mean. Tuesday, however, saw
temperatures falling into the lower 10s by sunset, winds gusting 40-45
mph, snow showers and wind chill readings below zero.
In northwestern Russia Tuesday, the town of Kalevala registered a
high of minus-18 degrees after plummeting 25 degrees below zero
earlier in the day. These readings were 25-35 degrees below the mean
daily high and low for the date.
