QUOTES FROM CENTRE DAILY:
"MARION TOWNSHIP - Two multiple-vehicle wrecks today on Interstate 80, one
involving 25 to 40 cars, shut down a 20-mile stretch of the roadway, killed
several people and sent more than a dozen to area hospitals.
The crashes could keep the westbound lanes of I-80 between the Lock Haven
and Milesburg exits closed until midnight, Fannin said. Eastbound lanes in
the area also were closed as of 1 p.m.
Fannin said both wrecks happened about 11:15 a.m. and may have been weather
related. Snow squalls in the area this morning occasionally obscured
visibility.
Fannin said the massive pileup, involving many tractor-trailers and other
vehicles, happened between Lock Haven and Bellefonte; the second crash,
involving three tractor-trailers, between Bellefonte and Milesburg.
The second accident occurred when a tractor-trailer carrying a
prefabricated home slid on the ice and its load broke into pieces and fell
onto the roadway and over the embankment.
State police declared the first crash a mass-casualty incident. Some
vehicles in the massive pileup were on fire an hour later, sending thick,
black smoke into the air that emergency responders said may be toxic."
