Saturday was the winter's first (indeed, the first since last
January 16th) day having a temperature below -70 degrees at Oymyakon,
Russia. Here, at the heart of the Siberian "pole of cold", Saturday's
low was 72 degrees below zero. Moreover, the day-time high was only
69 below, and the temperature again dipped below -70 Saturday
evening.
Deep winter cold invaded inter-mountain British Columbia, Canada,
early Saturday. At Puntzi Mountain, it was at least 45 degrees below
zero before daybreak. This was more than 40 degrees below the average
low for the date. Farther south, the cold fostered snow in the usually
mild coastal cities. Two inches of snow whitened both Vancouver and
Victoria. Far to the north, bitter cold for a second night gripped the
Nahanni National Park Reserve of southwestern Northwest Territories.
Following Friday's low of 52 degrees below zero registered at Rabbit
Kettle Lake, a day-time high of 47 below preceded Saturday's low of 53
below.
Thunderstorms rumbled through Kuwait City, Kuwait on Friday
night. Even though some rain fell, the thunderstorm's winds stirred
up clouds of blowing dust and sand which at times reduced visibility
to less than 100 yards.
Australia saw temperatures above the 115-degree mark again
Saturday, as has happened most days this week. In South Australia,
Oodnadatta reached a fiery 117 degrees, and Marree, 115 degrees.
Moomba also flirted with the 115-degree mark. In Western Australia,
the mid afternoon seared at about 115 degrees.
Tropical Cyclone Darius, having earlier skirted Mauritius, is now
over open waters of the South Indian Ocean. Late Saturday afternoon,
Darius was about 250 miles south-southeast of Mauritius. Now
weakening, the storm had top sustained winds just over 50 mph. Darius
is heading south-southeast at 17 mph and will become an extra-tropical
storm far from land within one to two days. Meantime, as Darius
brushed Mauritius, it whipped up winds clocked by the main airport at
between 55 and 60 mph in gusts.
Tropical Cyclone Heta is strengthening over the South Pacific
Ocean. Late Saturday afternoon, EST, Heta was 220 miles northwest of
Apia, Western Samoa. Now drifting southwards at 7 mph, Heta owns
highest sustained winds of nearly 85 mph. Heta is forecast to head
southwards and then southeastwards while strengthening substantially.
It will thus be a threat for high winds and flooding rains for Western
Samoa as it likely passes nearby to the west Sunday night, local time.
A tropical cyclone is at sea northwest of northwestern Australia,
and is not an immediate threat to any land. Saturday afternoon, the
cyclone (08S) was over the eastern Indian Ocean some 275 miles
north-northwest of Port Hedland, Western Australia. The cyclone has
40-mph top sustained winds and is drifting toward the southwest at 7
mph. Forecasts are for 08S to head towards the west and southwest and
not be a threat to land for the next two to three days.
Under a thick cloak of cloud and fog, much of Bangladesh was
abnormally chilly on Friday and Saturday. Bogra and Ishurdi both
registered a high of 56 degrees. Jessore and Comilla weren't much
warmer with highs of 57 and 59 degrees, respectively. These marks were
20 or more degrees below average highs for the date and were more
fitting of daily lows in early January. Saturday's "chill" was
comparable.
A long-lived wind and rain storm at Islotes Evangelista, Chile
began well before daybreak Friday and continued through Saturday. At
its peak, the storm lashed out with sustained winds of 70 mph and
torrents of rain that reduced visibility to a quarter of a mile.
