[STORMREPORTS] AccuWeather World Weather Highlights Friday, Jan 02

From: admin-auto{at}weathermatrix.net
Date: Fri Jan 02 2004 - 19:40:01 EST

January 2, 2004 6:52 p.m.

Friday was yet another day of withering heat over most of the
Australian outback. Whereas hot spots in Queensland and Northern
Territory topped out near 110 degrees, there were readings to at
least 115 in the states of South Australia and Western Australia.
Marree, South Australia, may have been tops with 116 degrees. In
Western Australia, Nullagine hit 113 degrees.

Tropical Cyclone Darius strengthened while skirting Mauritius to
the east Friday. Late Friday afternoon, EST, Darius is over the South
Indian Ocean about 50 miles southeast of Mauritius. The storm is
drifting towards the south at 9 mph with highest sustained winds near
65 mph. Darius is forecast to move away from Mauritius on an
open-water heading toward the south and southeast during the next two
days. Slow weakening seems likely.

Tropical Cyclone Heta is strengthening over the South Pacific
Ocean. Late Friday afternoon, EST, Heta is 385 miles north-northwest
of Apia, Western Samoa. Drifting southeastwards at 6 mph, Heta owns
highest sustained winds of nearly 65 mph. Heta is forecast to take on
a southerly tack soon, so it may threaten the Samoa Islands early next
week. Further strengthening is foreseen.

A tropical cyclone is gaining strength off northwestern Australia.
Late Friday afternoon, EST, the cyclone (08S) is over the eastern
Indian Ocean some 270 miles north of Port Hedland, Western Australia.
The cyclone has 40-mph top sustained winds and is moving towards the
west at 10 mph. Forecasts are for 08S to head towards the west and
southwest, or away from any land, while strengthening for at least two
to three days.

Friday's shroud of fog spread over the plains of Romania and
northern Bulgaria brought the spate of constant thick fog to a full
week in length. At mid afternoon, the airport at Bucharest, Romania,
registered visibility of 50 yards in thick fog and drizzle.

Bitter cold gripped the northwest of Canada on Friday. In the
Nahanni National Park Reserve of southwestern Northwest Territories,
the temperature dipped 52 degrees below zero at midday near Rabbit
Kettle Lake.

Under a thick cloak of cloud and fog, much of Bangladesh was
abnormally chilly on Friday. Bogra and Ishurdi both registered a high
of 56 degrees. Jessore and Comilla weren't much warmer with highs of
57 and 59 degrees, respectively. These marks were 20 or more degrees
below average highs for the date and were more fitting of daily lows
in early January.
