A tropical depression (27W) is drifting amongst the southern
Philippine islands. Late Saturday afternoon, EST, this depression was
centered 435 miles south-southeast of Manila, Philippines, and just
off the northern coast of Mindanao, the main southern island. The
depression was heading towards the southwest at 12 to 13 mph with
highest sustained winds of 35 mph. This weather maker will continue on
a generally southwestward track for the next day or two. It may
dissipate; even so, it will unleash local excessive rains in an area
that was devastated by rain-triggered mudslides earlier this month.
A fearsome blizzard Saturday racked the region of Chukotka,
Russia. Anadyr, near the northwestern shores of the Bering Sea, was
blasted by 70-mph steady winds and 90-mph gusts, all at temperatures
not far from 20 degrees.
Withering heat Saturday wafted deep into the southwest of
Australia. At Perth, 40-mph gusts accompanied a second-straight day
of 100-degree heat, although a sea breeze afforded a welcome break in
the afternoon. Inland, highs of 105 to 110 degrees were set over a
wide swatch of farming country, even touching shores of the Southern
Ocean.
