A broad, deep low over northern Australia is what is left of
Cyclone Debbie, which landed over the coast of Northern Territory
late last week. In its wake, rainfall within about three days has
been 14.2 inches on Elcho Island. At Katherine, well inland, 6.9
inches of rain fell, mostly Monday.
Strong thunderstorms Sunday and Sunday night swept over the
plains of middle and northern Argentina breaking a spell of heat.
Thundery squalls struck Buenos Aires in the evening unleashing gusts
of 50 to 60 mph. Farther west, over drier lands, the storms churned up
much blowing dust: Cordoba observed visibility down to 300 yards as
cooling thunderstorm outflow broke the day's 101-degree heat. At
Santiago del Estero, where Sunday hit a sweltering 104 degrees,
late-night thunderstorms kicked up 65-mph wind gusts. As for the
heat, it was at its worst along the dry foot of the Andes, where La
Rioja reached 112 degrees, and Catamarca, 110.
Since last Friday, rainfall amounted to 14.5 inches on Aneityum
in Vanuatu, the Pacific island nation.
The week has begun brutally cold in northern sections of Norway,
Sweden and Finland immediately both to the north and south of the
Arctic Circle. In Finland, the town of Sodankyla hovered 30 to 35
degrees below zero on Tuesday whereas an average day at this part of
the year would have a high of 10 above and a low of minus-2. In
northern Sweden, Tuesday's highs were 35-45 degrees below the daily
means. Kvikkjokk set a high of minus-30 degrees after a morning low of
minus-33. Here, the average high and low for the date are about 14 and
1, respectively. Other frigid Swedish sites included Hemavan where the
morning low was minus-30 degrees and Arjeplog where the high was 24
degrees below zero. Kautokeino, Norway, dipped 22 degrees below zero
Tuesday morning and could only muster minus-14 during the afternoon.
The last few days have seen accumulating snow in northern Scotland
even away from the Highlands. The city of Aberdeen, hard on the North
Sea, for example, registered a snow depth of 2 inches Tuesday. On the
Shetland Islands, too, snow lay 2 inches deep Tuesday at Lerwick.
