Cyclone Debbie is now well inland over northernmost Australia.
Early Sunday, EST, the core of this weakening cyclone is 185 miles
southeast of Darwin, Northern Territory, following a landfall near
Maningrida. Dissipation over land is all-but certain. Meantime, rains
instigated by Debbie amounted to 8.4 inches at Elcho Island, and 5.4
inches at Gove, both within about two days.
Long-lived Tropical Cyclone Cela is fading is it accelerates over
increasingly remote southern seas. Early Sunday morning, EST, Cela is
about 670 miles south of the southern tip of Madagascar. Cela will
become extra-tropical within a day or two.
Gales Sunday raged over the North Sea and some of its shores in
northern Europe as a mighty storm worked its way landwards. Busy with
shipping and petroleum producing structures, the North Sea saw many
reports of 40-60 mph sustained wind. In one oilfield, Ekofisk, winds
of 70-80 mph in gust were clocked. Shores of Netherlands and
northwestern Germany were raked by 50-60 mph gusts.
Heavy rains Sunday poured forth near the southern tip of Malaysia.
Singapore picked up 4.0 inches, but there were higher amounts nearby.
On small, nearby islands of Indonesia, amounts were: 8.8 inches at
Batan, and 6.0 inches at Tanjungpinang.
Sunday dawned chilly, even cold, in greater Havana, or La Habana,
the capital of Cuba. At the Jose Marti international airport near the
city's southern suburbs, the temperature dipped to 46 degrees or a
full 20 degrees below the daily mean.
Excessive rains have lately doused the tiny Spratly Islands in the
South China Sea. One island, Vietnam's Truong Sa, was hit by 5.8
inches of rain within 30 hours as of early Monday, local time. An
earlier bout of soaking rains left 11.9 inches here within 24 hours
Thursday to Friday.
