[STORMREPORTS] AccuWeather World Weather Highlights Friday, Dec 12

From: admin-auto{at}weathermatrix.net
Date: Fri Dec 12 2003 - 19:40:00 EST

December 12, 2003 5:01 p.m.

Winds of 50-70 mph Friday were observed at Banghazi, Libya. The
winds were kicking up loose dust and sand. The same storm was still
soaking northeastern Algeria and most of Tunisia, where widespread
rainfall was two to four inches within the last two days. At Hassi
Messaoud, in the Sahara of eastern Algeria, rainfall of 2.8 inches
may have topped the mean rainfall for a whole year.

Tropical Cyclone Cela is stalled over the Mozambique Channel off
west of Madagascar. Early Friday morning, EST, Cela is less than 50
miles northwest of Cape Saint Andre. Barely moving, the cyclone holds
45-mph sustained winds. Some movement to the south and southwest for
the next day or two is forecast for Cela.

A sharp cold outbreak chilled Central Asia Thursday and Friday,
and it even spilled into southwestern Asia. Snow fell widely along the
foot of the many mountain ranges between the Elburz and Kopetdag ranges
in the west, and the Hindu Kush, Pamir and Tian Shan in the east.
Iran, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan
all saw significant snows, some of which began with rain and even
wind-blown dust. Dushanbe, Tajikistan, had at least 8 inches of
snowfall. Cold, soaking rains ended along the south shore of the
Caspian Sea in Iran, but not before amounting to 6.5 inches at
Bandar-e Anzali. Along nearby slopes of the Elburz, snowfall likely
was measured by the foot, rather than the inch. Taking advantage of a
gap between higher ranges, cold north winds rushed across the desert of
Sistan near the Iran-Afghan border. At Zabol, Iran, temperatures
slipped into the 30s as winds of 50-60 mph kicked up "brown-outs" of
blinding dust. But the dust didn't stop here; instead, strong winds
wafted it to the sea in southeastern Iran, and across more than 100
miles of open water to Oman, where visibility Friday was under 100
yards at Masqat, the capital.

A fierce winter storm slammed northern parts of Norway Thursday.
The storm brought a mixture of snow, sleet, and rain driven by gale
force winds. In some spots, there were even reports of thunder. At
Andoya, highest sustained winds reached 47 mph, and gusts reached 78
mph. Several other locations reported sustained winds over 40 mph and
gusts also nearing hurricane force. At Tromso, well north of the
Arctic Circle, the barometric pressure fell to 959 millibars (29.32
in. Hg) as the center of the storm passed close by. In the tropics, a
storm with a central pressure that low would likely be a category
three hurricane.
