Hidi-ho good neighbors. Greetings from the wind tunnel of the mid Atlantic.
Throw in two more excessively windy days here at my homestead in the hills. Add
a truck load of rain and some moderate flooding and you have a basic Thursday
here.
Yesterday the wind gusted out of the SE at 61 mph and today it gusted out of
the WNW at 57 mph. That makes day 63 and 64 this year with wind gusts 40+ mph.
That is a new all time yearly record surpassing 62 such days in 2002. My
station now has had 31 days this year where the wind gusted 50+ mph. That is more
than double the previous record of 14 such days. With the wind came the rain.
My station saw 2.20 inches of rainfall during the two day period. The
excessive rainfall along with the melting 9 inch snow pack caused widespread flooding
for streams and rivers. There are three roads within sight of my home that are
still closed this evening from high water.
Some bad news for me came with the high gusts yesterday as some sort of
derbies was thrown more than 30 feet in the air taking out my anemometer. The
anemometer went dead 10 minutes after yesterday's peak gust. I was able to quickly
install my old back up anemometer but it tends to short out on me and I am not
sure how long it will remain running. Right now (8 PM) the wind is still out
of the NW at 27 gusting to 39. I am holding my breath that my back up
equipment can hold out until repairs are made. Until later...................
Jim
