Tuesday was unusually hot in South Africa's Kruger National Park.
The high of 110 degrees registered at Skukuza Camp was almost 25
degrees above average.
The first part of Monday night was abnormally cold over the
Scottish Highlands. The town of Aviemore dipped to 11 degrees around
midnight whereas the average low at this time of the year is about 34.
With the onset of a southwesterly breeze, however, the temperature
jumped to 33 degrees within only three hours.
Waves of torrential rain pounded Kuantan, Malaysia, early this
week. Rainfall beginning Sunday reached 17.7 inches within 60 hours
as of Tuesday evening, local time. Kuantan is on the eastern side of
the Malay Peninsula.
Snow whitened the hills of southeastern Italy early this week. As
of Tuesday afternoon, snow lay 18 inches deep in Campobasso, and at
Trevico, a 20-inch snow depth was observed. The instigating storm
also dumped 3 inches of rain upon Marina di Ginosa.
Tropical Cyclone Cela has landed in far northern Madagascar. Late
Tuesday afternoon, EST, the core of Cela is near the town of Daraina,
and about 400 miles north-northeast of Antananarivo, the capital of
Madagascar. Drifting towards the west at 7 mph, the storm's highest
sustained winds are down to 40 mph. Cela will continue across northern
Madagascar over the next 6 to 12 hours and will be much weakened
before slipping seaward over the Mozambique Channel. Rainfall from the
cyclone is 6.5 inches as of Tuesday afternoon, EST, at Sambava.
Cyclone Jana has strengthened further over the eastern Indian
Ocean. Late Tuesday morning, EST, the core of Jana is 170 miles east of
of Australia's Cocos Islands, which are southwest of southern Sumatra,
Indonesia. Jana now packs a 90-mph wallop as it drifts towards the
south at 10 mph. Jana is forecast to head towards the south and the
southwest for the next two days.
