A new tropical cyclone is gathering strength over the South Indian
Ocean. As of late Friday afternoon, EST, this un-named cyclone is
centered 295 miles east-southeast of Mauritius' Agalega Islands. With
highest sustained winds of 35 mph, the storm is moving toward the
west-southwest at 5 mph. The cyclone is forecast to slowly strengthen
on an open-water path toward the west-southwest during the next 24-48
hours.
Unusually heavy December rains pelted some of Colombia's Caribbean
shores the second half of this week. The city of Cartagena, for
example, was soaked by 4.4 inches of rain within 48 hours as of Friday
morning. This tally was more than 3 times the average monthly rainfall
of 1.3 inches.
Arctic shores near Russia's "Pole of Cold" suffered, not deep
cold, but a fearsome blizzard, of late. At Tiksi near the Lena River
delta, winds of 30-50 mph at temperatures of 12 to 22 degrees below
zero accompanied blinding whiteouts of snow and blowing snow. Friday
made for three-straight days of blizzard. There were also blizzards
along the arctic tundra westward to the shores of the Kara Sea.
Thursday and Friday, Spain's Costa del Sol wasn't -- sunny, that
is. At El Rompedizo near Malaga, on-and-off downpour left rainfall of
5.0 inches within about 36 hours.
High winds rocked the outer coast of British Columbia, Canada,
much of Thursday through early Friday. Late Thursday, gusts above 95
mph were clocked on Sartine Island off northern Vancouver Island.
