The month has begun on a rainy note on some islands of the
southern Caribbean Sea. On Aruba, rainfall from Sunday to midafternoon
Tuesday was 5.1 inches at the Reina Beatrix airport near Oranjestad,
the capital. Nearby, the Hato airport on Curacao was pelted by 3.8
inches of rain within only 30 hours as of midafternoon Tuesday thereby
equalling the average December rainfall. Both of these islands are
administered by the Netherlands.
Heavy rains spread eastward along the northern coast of Honduras
for a time early this week. The town of Puerto Lempira was doused by
6.0 inches of rain within 24 hours ended early Monday evening.
Torrential, flooding rains eased around La Ceiba, a city about 200
miles to the west of Puerto Lempira, early this week, but rainfall
since late last week was nearly 27 inches as of Tuesday afternoon;
most of this came Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Tuesday was unseasonably mild in a small part of central Europe.
Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein, rose to 68 degrees versus a mean
daily high of 43. In southern Germany, highs were 65 and 64 degrees,
respectively, at Hohenpeissenberg and Kempten; these marks were also
25 or more degrees above average for early December. In Austria,
Bregenz reached 65 degrees and Innsbruck spiked to 60.
Heavy rains off the Mediterranean Sea pelted Europe south and
west of the Alps Monday into Tuesday. About six inches of rain washed
Montelimar, France, as rainfall reached 3.0 inches in Marseille.
Rainfall was 3.4 inches at Genova, Italy.
November was a record-setting month in terms of excessive rainfall
in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The highest tallies were
logged in Puerto Rico. Topping the list of rainy-weary sites was
Naguabo with monthly rainfall of 43.0 inches, or about five times the
November mean. Luquillo collected 31.2 inches of rain during the
month, and there were many sites that totaled 15-30 inches. On the
island of Saint Thomas, Charlotte Amalie was soaked by 15.5 inches of
rain surpassing the former November record of 14.7 inches set in 1984.
The November rainfall record also fell at Christiansted, Saint Croix,
where 17.7 inches of rain bested the 17.0-inch tally from 1961; while
the month as a whole was wet here, downpours left more than 14 inches
November 10-14. While not a confirmed record, Cruz Bay, Saint John,
was soaked by 18.2 inches of rain last month. These excessive rains
caused widespread flooding leading to millions of dollars in damages.
