A tropical cyclone over the South Indian Ocean has been given the
name Beni. Late Tuesday afternoon, EST, the core of Beni is 125 miles
east-southeast of Diego Garcia in the Chagos Archipelago. The
cyclone's highest sustained winds are about 50 mph, and the storm is
drifting towards the southwest at 6 mph. A drift towards the
south-southwest is forecast for the next day or two taking the core of
Beni to the southeast and south of Diego Garcia.

An alert was hoisted Tuesday for the potential of a tropical
cyclone to form over the southern Philippine Sea. Tuesday afternoon,
EST, the disturbance in question was about 140 miles north-northeast
of Yap Island, and it was moving toward the west-northwest at 7 mph.

Monday, bursts of thundery rain broke over the holy city of
Makkah, or Mecca, Saudi Arabia. When all was said and done, rainfall
of 4.2 inches was registered, thereby accounting for 150 to 200
percent of a mean yearly rainfall.

A strong tropical wave pelted the Netherlands Antilles Monday and
Monday night. At the Prinses Juliana airport near Simsonbaai, Sankt
Marteen, rainfall was 8.4 inches within about 24 hours. On Sankt
Eustatius, Oranjestad gathered in 7.4 inches of rain.

It's been a fiery start to the week in far-western Australia.
Tuesday, the city of Perth withered at 105 degrees, or about 30
degrees above average for the date. Farther north, the sea-side city
of Geraldton cooked at nearly 110 degrees before desert winds yielded
to sea breezes. Still farther north, at least one sea-side town,
Dampier, came in with a high above 110; it was 111 degrees.

Bitter cold gripped the northwest of Siberia early this week. In
the Russian Arctic along the lower Yenisey River, early-morning
readings dipped nearly 50 degrees below zero on Tuesday. At Dudinka,
a low of 48 below was set, and the high was only 39 below zero. Both
high and low were about 40 degrees below average for the date;
moreover, they were 15 to 20 degrees below that of the coldest part
of winter. Other cold spots in the vast Krasnoyarski Kray included
Igarka, at 47 below, and Turukhansk, at 43 below.

Soaking showers and thunderstorms pelted eastern Argentina near
the Rio de la Plata Monday night. Rainfall was 3.4 inches within 12
hours at La Plata. Greater Buenos Aires was drenched by 2-3 inches of
rain during the same spell; the mean rainfall for all of November
here is 3.3 inches.

In southern Mexico, thundery downpours left rainfall of 5.1 inches
within 27 hours ended Monday evening at Coatzacoalcos, state of
Veracruz. Meanwhile, its been unusually hot lately in parts of western
Mexico. Choix, northern Sinaloa, reached 100 degrees Tuesday afternoon
after having topped out at 102 and 101 degrees, respectively, on
