Rains bolstered by moisture from the former typhoon, Melor,
washed southwestern Japan on Wednesday. Fukue tallied rainfall of 3.5
inches.
A sharp, wintry cold wave gripped the Great Plains of Canada
early this week. Tuesday, highs over Saskatchewan and Alberta
reaching right to the eastern Rocky Mountains were mostly in the
teens, some spots north of Montana holding below 10 degrees. The
day-time high at Lethbridge, Alberta, was only 6 degrees; the average
high for the date was 47. Even more striking was Wednesday's low,
minus-21, which undercut the mean low for the date by 46 degrees.
Edmonton's low of 10 below was a new record low for the date. While
not a record, Calgary's 6 below was less than average by 27 degrees.
In Saskatchewan, Swift Current ranged from 6 above to 9 below zero,
making for a daily mean of about 30 degrees below average. Val Marie,
hard on the Montana line, was colder than average by more than 40
degrees with it's morning low of minus-22 degrees early Wednesday.
Much of Chukotka, the most northeasterly region of Russian Asia,
basked in unusual warmth again Wednesday. The 30-degree high at
Cherskiy was about 30 degrees above average. A rainy thaw reached
beyond the Arctic shores to the island of Vrangelya, where the daily
mean temperature should be no higher than 10 degrees this time of
year.
Sofia, the Bulgarian capital city, was doused by unusually heavy
rain this midweek. In the 36 hours to early Wednesday morning, local
time, rainfall here was 2.4 inches whereas the mean November rainfall
is 1.9 inches.
Its been unseasonably mild lately throughout the British Isles.
With respect to normal, parts of northern Scotland have been the
warmest. Southerly winds blowing down the Scottish Highlands warmed
Kinloss to 64 degrees on Wednesday, for example. The early morning low
here was only 58 degrees. The mean daily high and low in early
November are 50 and 40 degrees, respectively. Meanwhile, those same
southerly winds reached 60 mph Wednesday at North Rona, a small island
to the northwest of mainland Scotland.
