[STORMREPORTS] Possible tornado NW of Washington DC this afternoon

From: smwincva_wxman{at}webtv.net
Date: Wed Nov 05 2003 - 18:30:15 EST

An apparent tornado touched down in the Germantown section of Montgomery
Co MD, about 15 miles NW of Washington DC. TV stations from Washington &
Baltimore were broadcasting live radar shots, tower cams, & DOT cameras
when I got home about 3:30pm.

Although video was slow coming in, reporters & other eyewitnesses phoned
in reports of damage to about a dozen townhomes in one
neighborhood.

Once the video was on tv, buildings with torn roofs & siding and windows
blown out were shown. Damage seemed like F0 to perhaps a F1 tornado.

No official confirmation had been made as of 6:30pm tonight, but read
how the excerpted AFD describes today's damage.

I missed much of the storm, as i was just getting off work (2pm) when
the struck Winchester (nw VA). As I was going outside, it was raining
moderately & lightning. After I was outside a few moments, I realized it
was more than a routine thundershower. The lightning, much of it within
the clouds, was frequent, 1-2 strikes per minute. It quickly moved ENE
toward Loudoun Co VA, reaching Montgomery Co MD about 3:15pm, and the
reaching Howard Co MD area, south of Baltimore about 3:45pm.

I might do a full report Thursday on today's storm, the recent heat, &
the foliage. (The foliage is now on the ground thanks to winds gusting
to 25mph during today's storm.)
