Weakening slowly, Tropical Storm Melor is drifting east of Taiwan.
Late Monday afternoon, EST, Melor is about 255 miles east-southeast of
Taipei, Taiwan, and 205 miles southwest of Naha, Okinawa, Japan.
Having highest sustained winds of about 50 mph, the storm is bound
towards the east-northeast at 11-12 mph. During the next 24-48 hours,
Melor is forecast to move over the eastern East China Sea passing very
close to Japan's Ryukyu Islands. A slow weakening trend is also
foreseen.
Tropical Storm Melor brushed southern Taiwan with gales and
flooding rains Sunday into Sunday night. At Hengch'un, the storm
unloaded rainfall of 17.1 inches within 24 hours. Rainfall of 7.0
inches at T'aitung paled in comparison.
Niksic, Montenegro, was swamped with heavy rain last weekend.
rainfall was 5.1 inches, mostly within about 36 hours.
Within little more than 24 hours, the Caspian shore at Ramsar,
Iran, was hit with rainfall amounting to 6.4 inches.
Monday, southeastern China sweltered under summerlike heat. In
Hong Kong and nearby Shenzhen, 91 degrees was reached. Shanwei,
Guangzhou and Yangjiang each recorded a high of 92 degrees. The town
of Xinyi soared to 93 degrees. These readings are fitting during the
height of summer, but are 10-15 degrees above average for early
November.
Sunday and Monday were unseasonably warm, even hot, on the island
of Kriti (Crete), Greece. At Iraklio, highs were 90 and 88 degrees,
respectively, Sunday and Monday whereas an average early November day
would peak near 70.
