A tropical disturbance hugging Mexico's southern shores holds the
potential to become the region's next tropical depression. The
disturbance, which partly owes its existence to the remnants of
Tropical Storm Larry -- a Gulf of Mexico cyclone, is located within 50
miles to the south of Puerto Angel, Mexico, early on Thursday; it is
drifting toward the northwest. At the least, this weather-maker has
the threat of producing heavy rainfall upon parts of far southern
Mexico.
As a bout of torrential rain ended on Friday, rainfall since
midweek reached 10.2 inches at Rangpur, Bangladesh.
Atop Germany's high peak, Zugspitze, the snow depth reached 55
inches early Friday. Within three days, heavy snow left a water
equivalent of 5.3 inches -- enough for about five feet of snowfall.
The snow depth rose by about 20 inches, so much of the snow was
likely swept away by gales that accompanied the snowfall nearly
10,000 feet above sea level. Also in the Alps, a weather observatory
atop the Sonnblick, somewhat over 10,000 feet, registered three-day
snowfall of 46 inches, and a snow depth of 52 inches early Friday.
High winds lashed southern Greenland early Friday. At
Narssarssuaq, winds gusted 60-75 mph through early afternoon. Winds
of a steady 60 to 65 mph were observed at Julianehab.
Abnormal warmth lingered Thursday in south-central Canada. Much
of southern Manitoba basked at 80 to 85 degrees. The city of Winnipeg
had its third-straight day of 80-degree warmth -- the high was 80 --
of which one day, Wednesday, set a new record high for the date. In
northwestern Ontario, Thunder Bay tied a record for the date of 74
degrees on Thursday.
