"MCLEAN -- Heavy rain and fierce winds tormented the McLean area only for
about 15 minutes Friday evening, but left enough damage to keep residents
cleaning throughout the holiday weekend.

A rain storm so severe that the opposite side of the street wasn't visible
started around 4:20 p.m. Friday, residents said. When it let up, a clear
view of the destruction it caused left residents wondering what just happened.

"It was wicked. Nothing has ever shaken the windows of my house before,"
said Robert "Tim" Wiese of 27 School Street. "It was no more than 15
minutes long but there were severe claps of thunder like I've never heard."

A fallen tree in the front of Wiese's house warped a section of the roof
just above the doorway and had limbs scattered in the front yard and on the
roof. Wiese used a chain saw to breakup a tree in the back yard that had
split during the storm, but left the larger mess to a tree removal service.

The National Weather Service in Binghamton had issued a severe thunderstorm
warning for Friday evening, said Meteorologist John Chiaramonte.

"It seems the McLean area was hit by straight line winds as fast as 70
miles per hour," said Chiaramonte. "We haven't ruled it a tornado. But if
enough people report it, we'll investigate."

Chiaramonte said a tornado touched down Friday evening in South Plymouth, a
town about 50 miles east of McLean.

As soon as the storm knocked out power, New York State Electric & Gas crews
responded to the McLean area and worked throughout the night to restore
service..."
