Winchester (nw) VA
We had been in pattern of warm but not hot temperatures & very humid
weather w/ occasional thunderstorms since late July.
A cold front moved south thru the mid Atlantic region Saturday afternoon
into Sunday.
Two major lines of thunderstorms formed. One formed east of the Blue
Ridge in VA/MD about 3pm Saturday & drifted southeast toward Virginia's
northern Neck & MD's eastern shore.
Another was in N PA that fizzled before reaching the Mason Dixon line. A
single cell from that line intensified rapidly about 8pm near
Martinsburg WV & continued SE toward Washington DC's western suburbs.
More thunderstorms developed NW of my location about 11pm Sat, and
drifted ESE toward us.
We had thunderstorms between 2:30am until about 6:30am early Sunday. The
first storm was isolated and dropped about .37" in 20 minutes, but no
rain fell 2 miles north of my location.
Another storm developed in the area about 3:30pm Sunday, and again
rainfall was isolated. I measured about .03". Radar showed heavier
amounts N & W of town.
I measured .63" total Sunday. WINC radio, just 4 miles north, measured
less than 1/10" for the weekend.
The lightning was very intense with Saturday's storms. If i had the
time, i would have gone outside & tape it. The "heat" lightning show was
near non stop between dusk (8:15pm) until 11:30pm. Even the overnight
storms had a "decent" amount of lightning (considering the time of
night).
I counted about 170 total flash flood, severe thunderstorm & tornado
warnings nationwide in the 24 hours ending 4am Sunday.
I counted about 50 LSR's for VA, but most of the damage seemed "routine"
as summer storms go.
While watching the news Sunday night, i saw that Crisfield MD was hit
hard by a microburst about 7pm Sat.
Crisfield is located on the Chesapeake Bay's eastern shore just north of
the VA border.
Winds were clocked at 96mph, and about 15 buildings received heavy
damage. A FD radio tower was bent over like a clothes hanger. A cluster
of trees were uprooted. I could not find a statement from the NWS on
the event, except for 1 LSR stating "building damage" in Crisfield.
I put vidcap album together on the Crisfield damage, and an AccuWeather
graphic on rain totals.
