August 13, 2003 5:41 p.m.

Wednesday, high heat again baked much of western Europe, though it
was less severe than recent days in some parts, and spread into
central parts of the continent. The core of Wednesday's hot weather
was found from southern France to Spain and Portugal. Southern France
had 106-degree highs at both Gourdon and Montelimar, and many top
marks of 100-104. Spain's hot spot was Cordoba where 107 degrees was
reached, but Girona was virtually as hot with a 106-degree peak
reading. Leading the way in Portugal was Evora at 106 degrees. Verona,
Milano, Firenze and Grosseto, all cities in the northern half of
Italy, registered highs of 100-102 degrees. The sizzling heat spread
into the heart of Europe Wednesday where the 100-degree mark was
breached at Geneva, Switzerland; in Austria at Vienna and Eisenstadt;
in Czech Republic at Prague; and in Slovakia at Bratislava. Karlsruhe,
Germany, spiked to 104 degrees, and several other sites in southern
Germany rose to 100-102. The intensity of the heat waned somewhat from
northern France and the Low Countries to southern England on
Wednesday. The high in Paris was 93 degrees; this was about 10 degrees
lower than Monday and Tuesday, yet still almost 20 degrees above
average. London's 83-degree high was the lowest since the second day
of the month, but still well above the average of 71.

Moscow, Russia, collected as much rain as one would expect in all
of August in just a couple of days early this week. Rainfall was 3.0
inches here Sunday night to late Wednesday evening, local time. Of
this, 2.0 inches fell within 12 hours early on Wednesday from thundery
downpours. The average August rainfall is 3.0 inches. This capital
city has not been alone in this wet weather. Indeed, while western
Europe has suffered through an unrelenting heat wave induced, in part,
by a upper-atmospheric ridge, some far eastern parts of the continent
have been locked beneath an unsettled, rainy trough.

Al Qaysumah, Saudi Arabia, baking at 117 degrees at mid afternoon
on Wednesday, was whipped by 35-mph winds. The winds, in turn, stirred
up clouds of thick dust that cut visibility to one hundred yards.

 Wynyard, Saskatchewan, observed a high of 103 degrees on Tuesday;
Monday's high was 102. At Estevan, Tuesday's high of 98 was two degrees
shy of the daily record high.

An unusually hot and dry weather pattern persisted over the
Bermuda Islands on Wednesday as afternoon temperatures again reached
90 degrees. Through the first 13 days of August, there were 12 highs
of 90 or 91 degrees. While the average high during this stretch was 86
degrees, then moderating effect of the Atlantic Ocean typically keeps
the temperature from reaching 90 degrees. In fact, 4 of the last 10
summers here had no 90-degree days at all. Wednesday was the 17th day
this year to reach this threshold. As stated, it has been abnormally
dry as well. Rainfall from June 25th through Wednesday was 1.3 inches
or less than one-fifth of average. In stark contrast, 10.7 inches of
rain was collected during August 7-14 last year.
