Even though I am almost surrounded by lakes here in NW South
Carolina, I have never really seen any lake effect, or, lake enhanced
weather events, other than fog. Today, however, I think I saw a lake
produced thunderstorm. As I was traveling from Greenville and got
off the I-85 exit to come to my house, I noticed some clouds in the
direction of the lakes and my house. I live about 8 miles from I-85,
and as I was approaching my area, several huge drops of rain started
to fall, and then, it quit. When I arrived at my house, about ten
minutes later, I noticed the sky had suddenly darkened, and a loud
clap of thunder welcomed me home. In less than 5 minutes, torrential
rain was falling! I immediately started monitoring the radar, and
sure enough...almost right over the lake to my East and Southeast,
yellows and red started appearing. The storm drifted NW right over
my area, and I received rain rates as high as 4.79"/hr. In about 35
minutes, I received 1.14" of rain! The storm continued to drift NW,
and once it got away from the lake influence, it began to die, and
didn't even make it across the county. Again, I don't know much
about lake influenced weather, like the areas around the Great Lakes
experience, other than some areas get blasted by huge snow storms off
the lakes. If anyone is familiar with the lakes in my neck of the
woods in NW South Carolina, I would like to know if it would be
possible for a storm like I had this afternoon to be lake produced?
It was a lone storm...no others were in my area at the time. The
coverage area appeared to be about 5 miles. Oh, well...it was
interesting and exciting, and I wanted to share it with all of you.
Now, if we can get the snow to develop like that this winter! Hey,
us Southern boys can dream, can't we?! Thanks for listening.
