Sunday became the hottest day on record in the United Kingdom
as an intense heat wave continued. At London's Heathrow Airport,
the mercury reached 100.2 degrees, the first 100-degree reading
ever recorded in England. Meantime, nearby Gravesend, Kent,
registered 100.6 degrees, setting England's new all-time high mark.
The old record for all of the U.K. had been 98.8 degrees recorded
in Cheltenham on August 3, 1990.
Sunday, heavy rains lingered over Senegal. At Kolda, rainfall
rose to 7.0 inches within 30 hours.
As of early Sunday morning, Guillermo had weakened to a tropical
depression with 35-mph winds over the open, eastern North Pacific
Ocean. Guillermo was headed towards the west.
Tropical Storm Hilda faded slowly over open waters of the eastern
Pacific Ocean. Early Sunday morning, Hilda was nearly 800 miles
southwest of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, heading towards the west-northwest
at 15 mph with highest sustained winds of 40 mph. Hilda was forecast to
weaken further along a westerly tack. In so doing it would be
downgraded to a depression.
Sunday marked the end of one of western Europe's hottest -- maybe
the hottest -- weeks of record. It saw all-time high marks in England.
Germany had, on Saturday, seen nearly 105 degrees at the town of Roth.
Also Sunday, 100-degree heat spread like a sweltering blanket over
France, with Paris reaching 103 degrees, and in the southeast,
Montelimar registered 105. Heat-weary Spain, Portugal and Italy also
saw highs of 100 degrees and above.
